When it’s super hot and you’re anticipating your face to be a pool of sweat or grease, makeup can seem like the last thing you’d want to add to it. Base makeup and heavy eyeshadows can melt in the heat and also have the tendency to over-clog pores. But at the same time, summer is the time for brunches and parties, so you’ll want all bright everything. The key is to choose a style that is low effort and high impact, and that’s where coloured eyeliner fits in perfectly. Just about every cool girl in Bollywood is feeling the same way, because they’re all bypassing the traditional smoky eye for a look that’s more fun, bright and fresh.
Priyanka Chopra wore aqua eyeliner and mauve lipstick on her second day at Cannes
Priyanka Chopra attended the Chopard party on her second night at the Cannes Festival in an iridescent purple Fendi dress. Chopra’s longtime makeup artist Pati Dubroff chose an aqua blue eyeliner to line her top lid, keeping it a thin line directly over the eye. By not bringing it outward into a more exaggerated cat-eye, it still came off looking minimal. Dubroff accented the eyes further by curling the lashes with an eyelash curler, and then apply two coats of a volumizing mascara to the bottom and top lashes. With the bright eyes, the rest of the makeup stayed simple—a clean, matte but dewy base, brushed up eyebrows and a subtle contour. Dubroff also buffed in a mauve blush into the hollows of the cheekbones, and finished by filling in the lips with a mauve lipstick and gloss on top. To get the eye look yourself, prep the lid with a primer like Revlon PhotoReady Eye Primer + Brightener to prevent smudging or creasing. Then choose a long-wearing liner like the Make Up For Ever Aqua XL Eye Pencil Waterproof Eyeliner, and reach for a volumizing and lengthening mascara like Benefit They’re Real! Lengthening & Volumizing Mascara, which won’t flake through the day. Hairstylist Danielle Priano swept the hair up into a sleek bun that pulled the hair back off the face and let the earrings show through.
Deepika Padukone and Kangana Ranaut followed suit
Deepika Padukone, who has always been a fan of a dramatic eye makeup moment, wore shimmery pink eyeliner to an event on her second day at Cannes. Makeup artist Sandhya Shekar updated her simple, dewy base makeup and rose-pink lipstick with a pink eyeliner just on the top lid. If you’re worried about working with cat-eyes, don’t be. Shekar told us her trick to making it work, “This style can seem intimidating, but an easy trick I use with a lot of the celebrities I work with is to keep the eyes open, staring straight ahead into the mirror. First draw the angular wing on both sides, and then shut one of the eyes to connect the wings to the lash line, before repeating the same on the other side. For experienced players, I believe it is essential to keep innovating and experimenting with shapes. Even something as simple as a winged eyeliner can offer a lot of variations—whether it is the natural shape, the vintage style or a really exaggerated one that takes the wing all the way up. Once your hands get steady, your options are limitless—so remember to play with shapes and have fun.”
Kangana Ranaut attended the Chopard party as well, and she wore a navy eyeliner with an overstated feline flick on the top lid. It paired well with a sleek top knot.
